A refugee befriending platform called HostNation is looking for volunteer befrienders to help refugees feel more at home in Tyneside.
Founded in 2017, HostNation is a city-and town-based introductory service connecting residents to refugees through small acts of kindness, inclusion and friendship. Having recently set up a new hub in Newcastle, the charity is looking for local volunteers to befriend an asylum seeker or refugee and help ease their transition to life in the UK.
Being a befriender takes three to four hours per week, and volunteers are paired with refugees based on factors such as age, gender and shared interests. All that’s required is a sense of goodwill and a desire to get to know someone new.
